ENVIRONMENT: WATER

NITRATE NITROGEN (NO3)

Nitrates are made from oxidation of ammoniac nitrogen caused by the bacterial flora living in water (an intermediate product is nitrites, NO2).
Nitrates presence in water is due to domestic sewage, livestock farming, industrial waste water and runoff of fields treated with fertilizers.
A high concentration of nitrates, together with phosphates and suitable weather conditions, produces the phenomenon of eutrophication.
